About Živogošće
In the southern part of Makarska Riviera, situated at the foot of Mt Živogošće.
It consists of three small, remote villages with each other - Porat - Mala Duba - Blato, situated along the coast and old hamlets along the old road. It is only 20 km from Makarska, 80 km from Split and 120 km from Dubrovnik.
Živogošće was inhabited by Illyrian and Roman times, as evidenced by Illyrian tombs on top of a hill Suzina and remains a rustic villa in Mala Duba and Blato.
Known Licinianus epigram from 474 Mr BC, comprised of 16 Latin hexameters - the finest example of classical literature - carved into solid rock above the Pokrivenice on the coast. It celebrates the Roman quaestor Licinijan source "fresh water", which still flows there.
As Živogošće village was first mentioned in mid 13th century
Živogošće Franciscan monastery, founded in 1616, was for centuries the center of spiritual life and literacy in this region, with a rich library and valuable art works.
Present form gets the last forty years when a more significant tourism development in these areas.
Natural beauties of olive groves and pine forests, which are hovering over small pebbled beaches, 6 km of interconnected beaches, clean and unpolluted sea, all in the foothill of the mountain, Top Sutvid 1155 m, giving tourists a special lure and pleasure of staying.
